I’m a self taught seamstress. Several years ago I landed a job as the head stitcher at The Joffrey Ballet of Chicago. This is a #tbt photo of the very first tutu I made at The Joffrey. The bodice is patterned from a vintage Karinska tutu, who was George Balanchine’s costume designer. It was such an experience to be part of the ballet world for a few years. (at The Joffrey Ballet)

Like Lenore Tawney, I also started out in sculpture, until I discovered weaving. In last night’s weaving class we briefly glazed over leno, a lacy open weave structure that Tawney favored in her sculptural weavings. #herronclothier #weaving #LenoreTawney #leno #teaching #sculpture

Here is a detail of the text from my BFA thesis weaving from over 10 years ago. Interspersed between the cardboard weft, is a yarn that was produced by the Amoco Petroleum Company. It had a greasy residue feel to it and was a good material for the concept of this piece.

Because I’m a night owl and I can’t ever sleep, I found myself cleaning a closet at 2am and found this! My BFA thesis weaving from SAIC over 10 years ago. It’s a nutrition label. I spent 6 months collecting food packaging of genetically engineered and processed foods, I sliced the packages into thin strips, divided them by color and wove them. The text is jargon words found on the packages. The technique I uses for the text was double weave pick up. @erinmriley you’d like how this is backed and finished…

After teaching tonight, I had herringbones and chevron patterns on the brain. I came home and made a tiny sampler on this @boardandbread loom to teach to my students tomorrow.
